Yukon, Canada, 2005: Nigel and Elasmotherium, the woolly rhino

The barren beauty of the Yukon in springtime doubled for Siberia during the last ice age in this, the first shoot for Impossible Picture’s six-part Prehistoric Park shoot. Here Nigel has inadvertently startled a huge Elasmotherium woolly rhino- a fearsome herbivore the size of an elephant boasting a six-foot horn. Incredibly these creatures co-existed with humans, who immortalised them in cave paintings which still survive to this day. In Nigel’s ice age adventure he is primarily looking for mammoths, but that’s not to say he doesn’t manage to fit in some close scrapes with woolly rhinos and a cave bear!
