Shooting in a southern Florida swamp, the Prehistoric Park, team recreated the Carboniferous world of Scotland approximately 300 million years ago. Here Nigel is trying to maintain a firm grasp on Crassigyrinus scoticus,, a real-life swamp monster that used to inhabit British waters! It looks a bit like a newt and may have had some similar habits, but this beast isn’t technically a member of the newt family. Working conditions in Florida in the summer were pretty horrific, with the crew having to contend with scorching temperatures, maximum humidity, frequent torrential rainstorms and attacks from blizzards of mosquitoes. Many days were spent shooting in deep, stagnant, smelly swamp water and just keeping the gear from being destroyed was a challenge. Here cameraman David Langan is operating the film camera in an underwater housing whilst his assistant Jim Bishop anxiously looks on.
