Igloolik, Canada, 2007: midnight walrus encounter
Itís 2:00 am in the morning. Usually, a film crew would be tucked up in bed at this hour, but in summer the sun never sets in the High Arctic. Just as well really, after several fruitless days, Nigelís team were running out of time to film walrus on the sea ice, so it was vital to take every chance to film. Finally, the Inuit guide spotted a couple of walrus on an ice floe. The crew approached nervously, wondering whether these cautious animals would disappear into the icy sea. Fortunately, the walruses proved to be very relaxed and quite happy to share their patch of ice with a strange assortment of humans carrying various electronic devices.
