Umfolozi National Park, South Africa, 2005: black rhino relocation project
The black rhino was almost wiped out by poachers in the 20th century, but intensive efforts in South Africa have safeguarded the species’ survival for the time being. In some areas, such as Hluhluwe Umfolozi National Park, the black rhinos have become so numerous that there are excess animals. In a massive operation over several days, black rhinos are selected to be sedated and airlifted out of inaccessible wilderness areas before being checked over and ultimately released into new territories. In this way the black rhino’s range is being expanded and the species has even more chance of persisting into the 22nd century. Nigel and the crew were on hand (and in the air) to document this incredible operation, planned and carried out with military efficiency. The resulting shots are powerful and fascinating.
