Ugly Animals

Nashville, USA, 2005: filming naked mole rats in the lab

Naked mole rats are small, wrinkly, virtually hairless rodents that live in Africa. They are also pretty ugly. Filming them in their subterranean African tunnels wouldn’t be impossible for Image Impact’s experienced wildlife crew but they preferred instead to visit the labs at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, where several colonies of naked mole rats are maintained and studied. Filming in the lab presented opportunities to film these amazing mammals at very close quarters whilst they went about their business of eating and wandering through their Perspex tubes. In his piece to camera, Nigel compared these critters to a somewhat unfortunate part of his grandfather’s anatomy, but to discover which part… you’ll have to watch Ugly Animals.
