Kalahari Desert, September 2003: Nigel proves useful to the local wildlife.
Meerkats are social animals and they travel across the desert in groups, searching for food. Digging in the ground for prey such as scorpions and geckos, they’re easy targets for eagles and other raptors. Fortunately, the meerkats take turns to go on guard duty- one individual will forego feeding and instead climb to the nearest convenient vantage point, from which it will relentlessly scan the skies for aerial invaders. The guards use a variety of calls to warn the rest of the group of approaching danger, and in this way the clan can forage continuously without fear of being pounced on. In this instance, Nigel is being utilised as a 6 foot 2 inch lookout post by a guard. Normally meerkats are exceptionally shy of people, but this one lives on a scientific research site where the meerkats have become accustomed to the presence of humans. Nigel was visiting to film sequences for his forthcoming film, Meerkats.
