Killer Whale Islands (2007)

January and February are the height of summer in the southern hemisphere, and on the Falkland Islands, 300 miles from the South American mainland in the cold waters of the South Atlantic, the wildlife makes the most of the warmer weather.

Most people, if you mention the Falklands, think of the conflict between Britain and Argentina in 1982. But I think of a million penguins, the largest seals in the world, killer whales hunting in packs and rare birds that make these islands their stronghold. I stopped off here briefly in the spring, and then came back for a proper visit in the summer, by which time king penguin chicks had hatched and seal pups were venturing out to sea. We used a light plane go ‘island-hopping’, exploring the most interesting wildlife sites and enjoying the rugged scenery.

But perhaps the most amazing scene of all was played out in the waters offshore, as a pod of orcas (killer whales), taught their young the hunting tactics that make these beautiful but deadly creatures the greatest predators in the southern seas. It was a nailbiting moment as an elephant seal pup found itself in mortal danger…
